Hyosun Choi

About

4-year old Hyosun mirrored her parents during their ballroom dance lessons.  An amused observer (and professional coach) offered to become the competition partner of this little human.  Soon, they were winning National and Regional Ballroom Dance Competitions, including the Grand Prix.  This overlapped with an accidental viewing of her cousin in Korean cultural dance school, which involved banging on Korean drums, rotating with pink feathered fans, and wielding a pair of wicked swords.  She joined the school and soon was performing at festivals and in parades.

When her parents quit, the chauffeuring to her ballroom lessons ended.  A few years after that, Korean cultural dancing dissolved as she dived into piano, cello, orchestra, flute, swimming, ice skating, tennis, golf, tutoring, horseback riding, art classes, and YMCA mentoring.  She also experienced internships with a wedding florist, event planner, Assemblyman, hospital, while discreetly working at cafes and restaurants, which her parents expressed disapproval OF.  (To be thoroughly pedantic, one doesn't end a sentence with a preposition.  But when Winston Churchill was confronted with the same criticism he replied, "This is the sort of nonsense up with which I will not put.")  This resulted in a decade-long separation from dance.

From high school valedictorian, Hyosun accepted a scholarship to USC’s accelerated 3-year pre-pharmacy program.  She graduated in 3 years with a B.A in Biology and a minor in Cinema, deserting the path to becoming a pharmacist.  Instead, Hyosun began dancing again, recreationally, at EDGE Performing Arts Center as she secretly pursued professional acting while studying at the Beverly Hills Playhouse.  Encouraged by her family, she went to New York Law School.

In New York, she took open classes at Atlantic Acting School, Alvin Ailey, Broadway Dance Center (BDC) and STEPS.  BDC's faculty teacher, Ginger Cox, invited her to join LiNK Dance Company.  This launched her professional dance career.  Within a few weeks of moving back to Los Angeles, she auditioned for LACDC and was a company member from 2010-2022.  Hyosun currently dances with Invertigo Dance Theatre, Iris Company, and La Dansa Dansa.  She is a certified trainer in the Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis Methods, works as a Training & Development Manager at Bank of Hope, is admitted to the State Bar in CA and NY, plays cello, piano, and guitar, composes music, travels off grid into nature, and reads.  Books.  Now and then, she sleeps.

So far, all her attempts to walk on water have failed.  So far.  She is very Choi-ful.
