Revitalizing Hope: Gyrotonic Applications for Breast Cancer Course
Blog Content Education Tips for Trainers // October 24, 2024
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we are excited to announce the return of the Gyrotonic Applications for Breast Cancer Course, now revamped with a new format and expanded tools to better support Trainers working with clients who are living with a breast cancer diagnosis.
The History and Evolution of the Course
Originally developed in 2010 by Master Trainer Leda Franklin, the Gyrotonic Applications for Breast Cancer Course was a valued resource for trainers until Leda’s passing in 2016. Her course had a strong following and empowered many Trainers to better support clients navigating life with a breast cancer diagnosis. Today, building on Leda’s legacy, Gyrotonic Master Trainers Miriam Honorio, Fabiana Bernardes, and Anne Thomasson have collaborated to revamp this course, bringing it back into the Gyrotonic Trainer education curriculum at a time when good breast cancer recovery options are needed more than ever.
Over the past decade, approaches to supporting individuals with breast cancer have significantly evolved. In the new evolution of this course, there is an emphasis on approaching clients with a holistic perspective, meeting the client where they are physically, mentally, and emotionally. This course provides strategies to address the various stages of diagnosis and recovery a client may be experiencing, and it also offers a variety of modifications and exercise choices a Trainer might consider based on the specific diagnosis and treatments a client may be working with.
The Gyrotonic Applications for Breast Cancer program aims to support individuals at any stage of their diagnosis and treatment, assisting in their physical recovery by promoting good breathing, mobility, strengthening, postural reorganization, and reconnecting with their own body.
Why the Gyrotonic Method is Ideal for Breast Cancer Treatment and Recovery
“The illness and treatment of breast cancer can lead to both temporary and permanent consequences in a person’s life,” says Fabiana Bernardes. “Juliu Horvath, the creator of the Gyrotonic Method, teaches that the ultimate goal is to feel comfortable in our own home/body. The gentle, grounding, and empowering nature of the Gyrotonic Method is especially suited to restore lost connections and establish new connections after what are often traumatic experiences along the journey through diagnosis, treatment, and post-recovery. The Gyrotonic Method is fundamentally rooted in a holistic and integrative approach to health, providing clients a way to feel functional, independent, and healthy again through breathing, self-awareness, and movement.”
Who Should Take This Course?
This course is open to all licensed Gyrotonic Trainers. Any Trainer who is interested in gaining information and skills that will help them to provide services to clients with a breast cancer diagnosis should consider taking this course. This course is a great option for the Trainer who has taken the Gyrotonic Applications for Breast Cancer in the past, and it’s an equally great option for the Trainer who is coming to the course with no previous experience.
Like the original course, the new course is grounded in Gyrotonic principles and builds upon the strategies and sequences of the Gyrotonic Teacher Training Program. With the new course, Trainers are also introduced to the latest discoveries in biological and therapeutic sciences, and are provided with new approaches, modifications and exercise choices that are informed by those discoveries.
What to Expect to take away from the Course
Theory-Participants will gain a theoretical understanding of breast cancer, including its origins, risk factors, anatomy, types of treatments and their side effects.
Practice-Trainers will learn four customizable exercise progressions, Gyrokinesis homework sequences designed specifically for this population, and four new programs on the pulley tower designed to support clients at various stages of their journey. Those four programs will build upon each other, but they can also be presented independently, depending on the needs of each client.
